The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for New York City from 10 AM to 10 PM on Sunday, 6/11. Active children and adults, and people with respiratory problems, such as asthma, should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors. The Community Board is the official municipal body whose mission is to advise and confer with government agencies, often times in conjunction with local elected officials, on matters affecting the social and economic welfare of the district. The Committee Chairpersons of Bronx Community Board 7 do this by providing an open forum where residents have the opportunity to express their concerns involving the projects, programs and policies that affect their neighborhoods.

This year marks as most eventful for Bronx CB7, as each committee reached their projected goals for successfully advocating, collaborating,and empowering members of the community, children, young adults, seniors, veterans and more.

Committee honored Veterans with the 1st Annual Soaring Eagle Awards Ceremony and Breakfast, hosting the Annual Veterans and Community Job Fairs, presenting Scholarships to Youth, or bringing powerful women leaders from for the 1st Annual Women s Empowerment Summit.

Land Use, Zoning and Housing Committee joined alliances with residents, community collaborators and other associations to protect Moshulu Parkway from down-zoning. According to a press release from the Northwest Democrats, residents feared that Moshulu would next to be consumed by new developers, eager to take advantage of the area s attractive zoning. WAM (Adhoc) Committee hosted its 1st Annual Women s Empowerment Summit which featured Women Business, Community Leaders from the Bronx and NYC Government. Prominent speakers included Letitia James, Public Advocate; Aurelia Green, Bronx Borough Deputy President; Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark; Registered Nurse Roberta Gjonaj; Cristina Contreras, North Central Bronx Hospital CEO; Anthropologist Dr. Rima Brusi; Maria Teresa Montilla, Institute for Latino Research President; Neva Shillingford-King, 1199SEIU Executive Vice-President and others. BRONX CB7 POSITIVE COMMUNITY IMPACT

Bronx Community Board Chairs also made presentations, provided information about their individual Committees and explained the importance of becoming active on their local Community Boards:Gwen Thomas-Steed, Chair of (WAM) Bronx CB7 Web Site, Media and Acknowledgement (Adhoc) Committee chairwoman; Jean Hill, Chair of Bronx CB7 Land Use, Zoning and Housing Committee; Gloria Bent, Chair of Bronx CB7 Education, Youth and Cultural Affairs Committee; and Robyn L. Saunders, MPA, Chair of Bronx CB7 Veterans Committee and Bronx CB7 Second-Vice Chair.

The Bronx CB7 Veterans and Senior Services Committees is hosting its First Annual Veterans Breakfast and Soaring Eagle Awards Ceremony at Lehman College -Music Building on Friday, February 10, 2017 from 9am-12pm.

It was an opportunity not only for all to enjoy a delicious breakfast buffet together, but to shed light on the prominent issues facing veterans, their families and dependents. In response, to the latest and most comprehensive report from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (2016), “22 military veterans on average die by suicide every day”.

The award ceremony, the first of its kind, where local government officials recognize, amplify, and honor those who have served our country and as well as those who continue to make extraordinary contributions to their communities by presenting them with “The Soaring Heights Eagle Awards”.

After which the Soaring Eagle Recipients will then Honor, Celebrate and Recognize their Spouses, families and dependents, and loved ones those who have also made enormous sacrifices, journeyed the distance, and have weathered the storms by presenting them with “The Wind Beneath My Wings Award”.
